The powder is derived from peptones which are being used in microbiological studies to support the nutritional requirements of microorganisms. This powder is basically a Casein which is milk protein. It is being digested with the enzyme pepsin. The product is in dark tan colour.

There is no such difference between paste form and powder form of peptone apart from the appearances. The paste is basically a casein which is milk protein. The color of the paste is Light yellowish to brownish color paste having characteristic odour.
A dark tan color thick paste having a characteristic odor but not pungent smell.
