The general meaning of peptone is a soluble protein formed in the early stage of protein breakdown during digestion. It is water-soluble protein derivatives obtained by partial hydrolysis of a protein by an acid or enzyme during digestion. Powder Peptone
The powder is derived from peptones which are being used in microbiological studies to support the nutritional requirements of microorganisms. This powder is basically a Casein which is milk protein. It is being digested with the enzyme pepsin. The product is in dark tan colour.

- Light yellowish to brownish yellow color free-flowing powder having a characteristic odor.
Solubility
- (2% soln. at 25o c)- Soluble in distilled water, clear.
Paste Peptone
There is no such difference between paste form and powder form of peptone apart from the appearances. The paste is basically a casein which is milk protein. The color of the paste is Light yellowish to brownish color paste having characteristic odour.
